How to Zero the Scanner
This page will list the steps required to zero your scanner using CyScan. Please note
that you will need special equipment for the calibration, along with a solid working-knowledge
of Cyscan procedures and the Administrator password for the computer.
Required Tools
- CyScan (Version 1.5 or higher)
- Square Block
- Calibration Cylinder
- Clay
Preparation
There are a few preparatory steps to consider prior to setting the offset to zero the scanner.
Do not skip these steps, as they greatly influence the final outcome of the zeroing procedure.
- Open the configuration file in a text editor. The configuration file is located in
the '...\CyScan\cfg\' folder and has the naming format of XX-####-factory.txt.
- Verify that the home position is set properly. This
step is not necessary if you are zeroing a Head & Face (PS) scanner.
- Secure the cylinder to the motion platform using a few pieces of clay. Try to
center the cylinder over the axis of rotation.
Procedure
- Open CyScan.
- Select the appropriate scanner, if necessary.
- Home the scanner by selecting Scanner | Home...
- Click the 'Setup' button. This action will open the scan setup window.
- Adjust the following settings in the scan setup window:
| Mode: | Circular |
| Texture: | None |
| Arc: | 360 |
| Pitch: | 1.0 |
- Click the 'Accept' button.
- Scan the calibration cylinder using the settings from above by clicking the
green Scan button.
- Wait for the scan to complete, then select Options | Tcl Console... to
open the Tcl console.
- Type this command into the Tcl console:
vw cc
A small window will open.
- In the top section of the calibration window, you'll see a text entry area labelled
Enter Target Diameter. Type the average diameter of the calibration cylinder into
the Target Diameter area. The diameter MUST be consistent to 0.1mm across the entire
cylinder. The diameter should be entered in millimeters (ie. 120.04).
- Set the viewing mode to Smooth Shaded Surface by selecting View | Smooth Shaded Surface.
- Use ALT+Left Mouse Button to click on a point in the BOTTOM 1/5
of the cylinder (within the colored area pictured below).

- Locate the following variables in your configuration file (opened in the
Preparation section of this document):
optab op0 set zoffset
optab op0 set rotationX
- Take note of the values in the Calibration window. It will tell you the
current values, the amount of the adjustment, and the CHANGE TO values.
- Copy the Change to value from the Calibration window into your
configuration file (zoffset, then rotationX).
- Save the configuration file.
- Exit CyScan.
- Repeat steps 7-18 TWO TIMES to ensure that you have the most
accurate settings.
