Scanning Tips and Tricks

Painting the Object

If you are unable to properly capture an objects form due to some surface coloring or reflectivity, we suggest that you paint the object to ensure that a more complete dataset is generated. There are two (2) primary paints that we recommend due to their ease of use and ease in cleaning:
  1. Developer:
This spray is used in manufacturing facilities to test the finished product to see that it is free from defect. It goes onto the surface of the subject easily and dries quickly. The spray presents our scanners with an optimal surface for digitization.

  2. Tempera Paint:
Any manufacturer is acceptable, and this paint can be purchased at most art supply stores for under $5.00US. A matte-white or matte-gray color should be used for the best results.

Preparing Hair

Hair is a very difficult problem for laser-based scanning devices. We have found a few products that work wonders when you are trying to get the fine texture of hair into the scanned data. The two products that we use are:
  1. Corn Starch:
Believe it or not, a medium to heavy dusting of the hair with corn starch will do wonders for the amount of hair that is captured in a scan. To apply, do the following:

    1. Pour some corn starch into a small, deep bowl.
    2. Dip a paint brush (dry) into the corn starch. A 3" or greater paintbrush will make the job a little quicker.
    3. As you move around the subject, bounce the paint brush off of the hand not holding the paint brush to dust the hair.

The subject can then shake the corn starch out of his/her hair at the end of the scanning session. We highly recommend that the subject have his/her eyes firmly closed during the dusting process.

  2. Make-Up Artists Hair Spray:

  3. Hair Gel
Any ordinary clear hair gel will do for the purposes of scanning. It is important to get quite a bit of this substance into the subject's hair, in order to make it clump together.
