Whole Body Scan Tutorial

In this tutorial, you will complete a single scan of a human subject using a Cyberware Whole Body scanner and the DigiSize software. Further information on each of the commands and menu items is available in the DigiSize User Guide.

1. Double-click the DigiSize icon to launch the program.

This action will open the program window as illustrated below:

2. If necessary, select a Whole Body scanner.

2. Double-click the WB scanner in the Choose a Scanner dialog.

The DigiSize window will update to include the basic Whole Body controls, as illustrated below:

3. Position the Subject

Place the scan subject as near to the center of the motion platform as is possible. It is not necessary to have the subject in the exact center, but the best results are achieved, in most cases, when the subject is properly centered.

4. Adjust the Scan Parameters

The appropriate settings should be made using the Scan Setup button to capture the image. These settings will tell the scanner the length of scan to acquire and at which sampling pitch.

Open the Scan Setup buttons by clicking on the Setup button at the bottom-left of the main DigiSize window. You will see a window similar to the following open on the desktop:

• Texture

The texture setting tells the digitizer to capture the subject's luminance or color values, or to ignore them. In this example, we have no need of the luminance or color data, so select None.

• Width

The default width (height) of 2000mm is acceptable for this tutorial, so leave this selection alone.

• Pitch

The default pitch of 4mm is acceptable for this tutorial, so leave this selection alone.

Your scan settings should now look like this:

5. Press the Accept button to set these parameters for the next scan.

6. Scan the Subject

Initiate the scanning process by picking the Scan button at the bottom of the application window.

At this point, the user may be presented with a dialog box requesting to perform a home routine. You should choose to home the platform by clicking Yes when prompted.

After a short period of time (<30 seconds) the object should appear in the display area of the program window.

If the object looks like a series of lines, or a bunch of points, select the Smooth Shaded Surface rendering modes from the lower section of the main DigiSize window.

7. Display Navigation

Moving the object around in the display area of the program can be a confusing matter for inexperienced users. There are relatively few rules regarding the movement of the subject, but they are presented as follows (These instructions assume the use of a three-button mouse):

Left Mouse Button:	This button controls the rotation of the subject around the X, Y, and Z axes. Careful placement of the cursor is important for accurate movements. The center point of the rotation will be placed at the point the cursor points to as you depress the left mouse button.
Right Mouse Button:	The right mouse button controls the panning motion in the up/down and left/right directions. Simply click anywhere in the window and drag to the left/right or up/down.
Control + Right Mouse Button:	This combination controls the zooming of the subject. To zoom in towards the subject, hold down the Control key, then click anywhere in the window with the right mouse button and drag the mouse down. To zoom away from the subject hold down the Control key and click anywhere in the window with the right mouse button and drag the mouse up.

8. Save the File

We can now write the scanned object into a series of file Echo files, one Echo file for each scan head:

1. Select Save As Echo... from the File menu. You will notice a Save Dialog Box appears.

2. Navigate to the directory into which you would like to save the files. For the purposes of this tutorial, save the files into the ...\DigiSize\guide\download\ folder.
3. Supply a name for the file. For the purposes of this example, name the file hiresWB.

You will be asked for permission to create a new folder, called hiresWB. This folder will be used to store the 4 scan files. Press the Yes button to save the files into the new folder.

NOTE:
For Echo scan files, Cyberware has chosen not to use a three-character file extension for historical reasons. The CyScan file format will take the Inventor file extension, .iv.

When the save operation is complete, you should see a confirmation dialog similar to the illustration below:

4. Press the OK button to continue.
9. Exit DigiSize

To complete the scanning process, select Exit from the File menu. You will notice that the program window will disappear from the desktop.

Alternately, you may click the Exit button at the bottom of the main window.

10. Combine the four scans into a single PLY file
1. Launch CyPie by double-clicking the cypie.exe executable, located in the ...\Program Files\headus\ folder.

You will now see the CyPie interface:

2. Press the white arrow next to Dir..

This will open the Directory Select window, pictured below.

3. Navigate to the ...\DigiSize\guide\download\hiresWB folder.
4. Press the Select button. This will allow CyPie to work with only those files in the hiresWB folder.

5. Press the blue arrow next to CyPie, near the top of the window.

6. Press the Load button in the CyPie Controls window.

The window should expand to show all of the file loading options:

7. In the Prefix text area, enter the beginning file name for the four scans, hiresWB.

8. Press the Reload button in the main CyPie window. This action tells CyPie to look in the specified folder for any valid files with the prefix of hiresWB.

9. Towards the bottom of the CyPie window, press the Merge button to combine the four Echo scan files into a single PLY file.

10. When the merge process completes, press the Exit button to leave the CyPie software.

11. Confirm that you would like to exit the software by clicking the Exit button.

11. Convert the File

To convert the file to any of a number of industry-standard file formats, use the PlyTool program. Please see the PlyTool Tutorial for more information.

Summary

The above steps cover the most basic use of the scanner. In this tutorial, you launched the program, opened a new scanning session, set the appropriate scan parameters, digitized the subject, displayed the object, and saved the data in the PLY file format.
