Adjusting the F-Stop

These instructions pertain only to SCSI-based Cyberware scanners. On all other models, the f-stop is preset at the factory and should not be adjusted. There are software controls that will perform the same function on all USB-based scanners. Contact Cyberware Support for more information.

F-Stop Basics

The f-stop controls the amount of light that is allowed to pass through a camera lens. In the case of the Cyberware 3D Digitizers the f-stop controls the amount of light that will be cast upon the data collection CCD.

To increase the amount of light that passes through the lens, you should decrease the f-stop value.

Inversely, to decrease the amount of light that passes through the lens, you should increase the f-stop value.

Examples

If the color map that is collected is too bright, you should close the f-stop. If the current f-stop setting is at 5.6, you should set the f-stop to 8.

If the object you are scanning is very dark, you may notice that there are an unusual number of void points in the range data. In this case, you should open the f-stop to allow more of the laser light to strike the CCD. If the current f-stop is set to 5.6, you should adjust it to 4, or maybe even 3.3.

Range Camera Adjustment
  1. If you have a 'door' on the side of the 3030 camera head, remove it. There are 6 M2 Hex Head Screws that secure it. If the 3030 does not have the 'door', you must remove the entire 3030 cover. You must remove approximately 20 M2 Hex Head Screws to accomplish this.
    2. WARNING:
    Be very careful when removing the cover, so you do not disturb the mirrors or the electronics.
  2. You will notice that there are 2 camera lenses inside your 3030 head. The range camera is the one furthest inboard. The range camera also has 2 large prisms located directly in front of the camera. Adjust the f-stop ring to a LOWER number to INCREASE the amount of light that is received. If you need to DECREASE the amount of light, RAISE the number on the f-stop ring.
  3. Replace the 3030 Cover/Door, but do not put the screws in to secure the cover.
  4. Take a test scan to see if the adjustment was adequate. If the results are good, replace all M2 screws. If not, return to step 1 above.
NOTE:
You must readjust the CCD sensitivity (on models that support this feature) after making any adjustment to the RANGE camera f-stop.

Color Camera Adjustment
  1. If you have a 'door' on the side of the 3030 camera head, remove it. There are 6 M2 Hex Head Screws that secure it. If the 3030 does not have the 'door', you must remove the entire 3030 cover. You must remove approximately 20 M2 Hex Head Screws to accomplish this.
    2. WARNING:
    Be very careful when removing the cover, so you do not disturb the mirrors or the electronics.
  2. You will notice that there are 2 camera lenses inside your 3030 head. The color camera is the one furthest outboard (If you are looking into the camera from the aperture, the color camera is to the far left of the 3030 head). This camera DOES NOT have large prisms located in front of the camera. Adjust the f-stop ring to a LOWER number to INCREASE the amount of light that is received. If you need to DECREASE the amount of light, RAISE the number on the f-stop ring.
  3. Replace the 3030 Cover/Door, but do not put the screws in to secure the cover/door.
  4. Take a test scan to see if the adjustment was adequate. If the results are good, replace all M2 screws. If not, return to step 1 above.
